Overview

Description

Ricker Pond State Park is one of seven parks located in the 27,000-acre Groton State Forest. This quiet park is situated on the shores of Ricker Pond. The waterfront lean-tos, cottages and cabins make this a favorite family camping spot. Built by the CCC in the 1930's you can still enjoy some of their work, such as the rough-hewn stone picnic table and log picnic pavilion. The haunting calls of loons are often heard throughout the season. When you camp in one park, you get into all the others for free during your stay, so you can enjoy all seven parks located in the Groton State Forest.

Geography:

The rocky, tree covered hillsides were originally cloaked with white pine, spruce, hemlock, beech, maple and birch. These were initially logged by local farmers for lumber, fuel and potash. The logging industry was large-scale for almost 100 years while the railroad was operating. Today, logging is still a vital industry in the area, but has lost some of its dominance in favor of modern society's leisure time movement.

Recreation:

Excellent camping, swimming, boating, fishing and hiking. Canoes and kayaks are available for campers to rent. Nature and interpretive programs are offered at the Groton Nature Center.

Facilities:

2 fully furnished rental cottages, 5 rental cabins, 26 tent/RV sites, 23 lean-tos, restrooms with flush toilets, hot and cold running water and coin-operated showers. There is a swimming beach, cartop boat launch and picnic pavilion for campers. Drinking water is available throughout the park. Firewood is available for purchase. There is an RV sanitary dump station, but there are no hookups.

Nearby Attractions:

Other parks in the Groton State Forest, Granite Museum/Quarry Tours in Barre, State Capitol in Montpelier, Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury
