Overview

Description

Welcome to the Waterbury Reservoir Remote Sites located within the Mt. Mansfield State Forest. Waterbury Reservoir offers unique recreational opportunities for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, hiking and camping, as well as motor-boating. This is not your typical Vermont State Park camping experience. All campsites can only be reached by paddling or boating to them - some are a one-to-two-mile paddle from the launch site.

The 860-acre Reservoir was constructed between 1935 and 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a source of flood control and later used for hydroelectric energy production. The Little River hydro station is operated by Green Mountain Power and is located at the base of the dam.

The camping amenities include 27 campsites, all with a moldering toilet nearby, located around the shores of the reservoir with all sites being waterfront, or with a water view. Access is by one of three boat launches located around the reservoir. Motor boaters should note that there are two 5 mph/no-wake zones, which, with the protection by the 200’ law and right-of-way laws, provide areas for those looking for a quieter paddling experience. Campers are strongly encouraged to use cook stoves or bring their own firewood, also to pack water filters, adequate food/shelter and emergency supplies. Campers should not bring anything you are not prepared to carry in and carry out.

The remote campsites can only be reserved online, and through our call center, starting May 15, 2021. Sites not reserved are first come/first served. Information about open campsites may be found at each access area. Campsites may be used by any single party for up to 7 days. Every remote campsite has a maximum occupancy of 6 people, unless otherwise posted. Boats are not provided, with campers required to bring their own vessels.

Facilities:

There are 27 remote campsites available by reservation, and seven day use sites. All campsites and most day use sites have a moldering toilet nearby. Sites are available by online reservation only, or thorough our call center. The only fee incurred will be the reservation fee for camping reservations. The maximum number of consecutive nights for camping is seven. There are three boat launches that remote campers can use to access the reservoir. Boat launches are located at Waterbury Dam, Blush Hill, and Moscow / Cotton brook. Every remote campsite has a maximum occupancy of 6 people.

Nearby Attractions:

Ben & Jerry's Factory, Cold Hollow Cider Mill, Camel's Hump, Hunger Mountain and Mount Mansfield hiking trails.
